Frequently asked questions

What is an accountable care organization?

An accountable care organization (ACO) is a group of physicians, hospitals and other health providers that voluntarily collaborate to provide efficient, high-quality and coordinated care to patients with Medicare fee-for-service as their insurance.
If my doctor is in the Keystone ACO, can I still see any doctor I want?

Yes. If your doctor participates in the Keystone ACO, you can see any healthcare provider who accepts Medicare.
Is the Keystone ACO a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), managed care or an insurance company?

No. The Keystone ACO is a group of doctors, hospitals and other healthcare providers who work together to provide you with better, more coordinated care. Physicians, hospitals and other providers in the Keystone ACO communicate with you (and each other) to make sure you get the care and support you need to stay healthy and well.
How do I know if my doctor is in the Keystone ACO?

Participating providers will display a poster that notifies you of their participation in the Keystone ACO. The poster will also inform you of your option to decline sharing your healthcare information by calling 800-MEDICARE (800-633-4227). TTY users can call 877-486-2048.
If you aren’t sure whether your doctor or healthcare provider participates in the Keystone ACO, ask them during your visit. For general information about ACOs, call 800-MEDICARE.
Who has access to my medical information and is it secure?

Those who work together in the Keystone ACO — doctors, hospitals, other healthcare providers, and other staff authorized to help coordinate your care — will be able to read your medical records. Rest assured that the privacy and security of your medical information is protected by federal law. Contact your doctor’s office for more information about how they protect your medical information or call 800-MEDICARE (800-633-4227) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. TTY users can call 877-486-2048.
How will the Keystone ACO improve my care?

When your healthcare providers have access to your health information and can share this information with one another, they can provide better, more coordinated care. Each of your providers will be aware of the health issues you’ve been treated for, as well as have a more complete picture of your overall health. When your healthcare providers are part of the Keystone ACO, you can expect to see better, more coordinated care over time. Our beneficiaries are the center of care and their good health and satisfaction is our goal.
